VFACTS: May 2022 Car Sales Statistics

New car sales in Australia fell 6.4 per cent in May to 94,383 units – which is being blamed on continued supply shortages by car brands.

Although it wasn’t a bad May for all car companies: Kia posted a stunning result, ranking second overall for the best finish of all time. Market leader Toyota, Kia’s older brother Hyundai, Plus MG, Subaru and Suzuki have all posted strong growth.

No surprises have been revealed for the most popular models: the Toyota Hilux at the top, the massively supplied Toyota RAV4 (which has a waiting list of more than 12 months), and the Runout Ford Ranger, still strong to the end.

In the same month of 2021, the number of sales across the market was 100,809. Sales in all parts of Australia fell (2.4 per cent higher) in May 2022, except in the Northern Territory, and there were unanimous negative results for passenger cars, SUVs and light advertising.

The result was a year-on-year decline of 4.1 percent to 437,884 sales.

“The global automotive industry is plagued by microprocessor unit shortages and shipping delays. This problem is not unique to Australia, “said Tony Weber, chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

“Car makers continue to report high demand across dealer showrooms and online marketplaces. Epidemic disruptions continue to affect production and collisions in Ukraine have disrupted the supply of car components.

“Monthly sales figures also depend on the arrival of shipping which remains uncertain. We do not expect the supply chain to be stable until this issue is resolved. “

Brand

Toyota is up 7.8 percent, but demand for its products is much higher – it just can’t get enough stock. Hilux, RAV4, Corolla and Evergreen Prado were its top sellers.

A significant result, the Kia 7307 ranked second in sales, partly due to the record-breaking decline by most major competitors. Nevertheless, it drove Hyundai to third place for the month and contained a slim lead YTD.

Mazda has dropped from second to fourth place, with dealers now reporting stock snags to a greater degree than Mitsubishi and Ford. MG, Subaru, Isuzu Ute and Nissan are in the top 10.

The Mercedes-Benz defeated the BMW overall, but the Mercedes van out and the BMW actually had its measure (2534 passenger cars and SUVs vs 2282). The Volvo (1121) surpassed the Hubble Audi (941) to occupy the luxurious podium.

The big brands competing in terms of percentage include Mazda (38.7 percent less), Ford (19.4 percent less), Nissan (31 percent less), Volkswagen (44.7 percent less), Audi (45.4 percent less), Lexus (below) 33.9 percent, Skoda (50.9 percent less), and Land Rover (28.2 percent less).

On the other hand, there were some other positive results: Suzuki grew by 38.9 percent and led the light car market, GWM by 25.7 percent, Volvo by 18.6 percent, Renault by 17.9 percent, RAM trucks by 94.7 percent, and co-licensed RHD converter Chevrolet by 33.1 percent. Got it.
