Maserati has unveiled a convertible version of its 2023 MC20 Supercar, avoiding the automaker’s more traditional Spider name for the open-top car for the new name Cielo.
The name means “sky” in Italian and its use in the convertible MC20 is appropriate because residents get a full view of the sky, whether the roof is up or down. This is because the automatic roof of the car is made of glass, especially electrochromic glass which means the level of transparency can be changed instantly.

Adding a retractable hard-top (as opposed to a soft-top) means that the MC20 Cielo should have the same comfort, noise level and driving performance as the coupe. The roof is operated through a central screen, and it takes just 12 seconds to turn a car from a coupe into a sun-drenched roadstar.
There is a penalty of 143 pounds (resulting in a loss of 3,395 pounds), although it will be difficult to notice from behind the wheel. The MC20’s carbon-fiber monocoque structure made possible such a small weight penalty that did not require any additional reinforcement, as it was built from scratch to support the roofless version of the vehicle. It was also designed to support a battery for a planned electrical version of the MC20 called the MC20 Folgore.

In addition to the ability to lower the top, the MC20 Cielo is virtually identical to the coupe. The back of the cabin features a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 rated at 621 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. The drive is routed to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic and sees the car sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds and finally tops out at speeds close to 200 mph.
The arrival of the MC20 Cielo adds some new features to the MC20 range. New items include a surround-view camera, traffic sign detection and automatic emergency braking. Maserati said the available 12-speaker Sonus Faber audio system is specifically tailored to the unique acoustic and positioning needs of the MC20 Cielo’s cabin.

The MC20 will have a special PrimaSerie launch version of the Cielo. Limited to just 60 units worldwide, the cars will come with some exclusive items and additional equipment, one of which is a unique combination of new color Acquamarina for the body, combined with matte black finish wheels and a “PrimaSerie” script.
The MC20 coupe starts at $ 212,000 and the MC20 Cielo will definitely carry a premium. Price information will be announced near the market launch.
There is a busy year ahead of Masrati. In addition to the MC20 Cielo, the Italian brand will start selling the new Grecale small crossover and a newly designed GranTurismo boasts an electric model that delivers more than 1,200 hp.
