Polestar plans to hunt Porches with 5 884 hp

Polyester on Wednesday unveiled the first details of the Powertrain for its Polyester 5 Four-Door Grand Tour, which debuted in prototype form at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

A pair of motors that will enable all-wheel drive Polyester 5 will power the Goodwood Mountains. Together, Polyester is aiming for two motors to produce 884 hp and 663 pound-feet of torque. The automaker did not cite specific output for each motor but noted that the rear motor is more powerful.

Polyester further confirmed that the 5 will have an 800-volt electrical architecture, which will enable faster charging.

Lots of power and an 800-volt architecture will help the Polstar take on the Porsche. During a presentation last year, the automaker compared the 5T to the Porsche Tycoon and the Panama. Recall that the Tycoon was one of the first EVs to feature an 800-volt architecture, although it has expanded to other new EV platforms, such as Hyundai’s e-GMP architecture.

The Polyester 5 will also have styling based on the Polyester Precept concept, which was first shown in February 2020. While the prototype displayed in Goodwood is in disguise, leaked patent images indicate that most of the styling of the concept will be shifted to the production version, which is set to launch in 2024. However, it will probably launch late enough in the calendar year that it will not be the 2024 model.

Before the launch of the Polyester 5, we will see the Polyester 3 medium sized SUV. It will debut in October and will begin production in 2023 at factories in China and Volvo’s South Carolina. The SUV, like the Polestar 4 coupe, will be unveiled in 2023 and will likely be a rival to the upcoming electric Porsche Macan.
