A new species of Lamborghini race car is coming soon.
Lamborghini has just announced that they are currently building their first LMDh prototype race car. For those who don’t know, LMDh means “Le Mans Daytona hybrid,” and the new Lamborghini will be ready for hypercar class in the 2024 season of the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship (GTP Class).
The LMDh class race car is in charge of this new adventure, with the exception of Squadra Cors, who recently demonstrated their skills with the Assange SCV12. Unlike the Essenza SCV12, however, this new race car will be powered by a hybrid powertrain. This makes perfect sense for Lamborghini as they have set a deadline of the end of 2024 when their entire lineup will be hybridized.
“This step towards the highest level of sports car racing marks an important milestone for our company,” said Stefan Winkelman, chairman and CEO of Lamborghini. “We will measure ourselves against the best, on the most demanding basis. On the one hand, it will give our successful motorsports program more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels. “
With the addition of the LMDh series, the Lamborghini Squadra Corse will have their hands full with their Super Trophy and GT3. It’s great to see Lamborghini diving deeper into the world of motorsports because the bulls on the track can’t lose anything.
