Lamborghini celebrates the 60th anniversary of its V12, starting with the 1964 350 GT

The engine platform that captivated the ears and hearts of millions of people.

Automobile Lamborghini is famous for creating the world’s most iconic supercar, using the DNA and heartbeat of a huge naturally aspiring 12-cylinder engine. The tradition of incorporating V12 engine platforms began long before Murcielago and the Aventador SVJ, in the early years when the brand was transitioning from working as a tractor manufacturer. Nearly 60 years later, Automobile Lamborghini is proud to celebrate its V12 era, recalling its history and involvement in Italian supercar development. The first Lamborghini to leave the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory in 1964 was the 350 GT, An early front-engine model has been delivered to Livorno-native jazz drummer Giampiero Giuseppe. The same car, currently the oldest existing Lamborghini, has been fully recovered and certified by Polo Storico, won the best in the show at the Lamborghini and Design Competition held in Trieste, and hosted by Lamborghini Polo Storico in 2019.

Over time the V12 also arrived, making its presence felt on the Lamborghini 400 GT that arrived shortly after. The 400 GT gained popularity from celebrities like Bassist Paul McCartney of The Beatles, who owned a red 1968 400 GT chassis # 1141 for over ten years. With a successful brand launch, Lamborghini quickly saw traction with a Cinematic star role in the 1967 Columbia Pictures film Kill Me Quick. Since its debut in 1964, Lamborghini’s V12 engine has become a standard for other infamous models such as the Miura, Countach, Diablo and many more.
