Hudson Hornet and Chrysler turbine cars have been added to the national historic vehicle

The Hagertee Driver Foundation has announced that the 1952 Hudson Hornet “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” and the Chrysler Turbine Car have been added to the National Historic Vehicle Register. They are included in the 31st and 32nd Vehicle National Historic Vehicle Registers, the only federally recognized program to document the historical and cultural significance of automobiles.

Jonathan Klinger, executive director of the Hagertee Driver Foundation, said: “Featuring historically significant vehicles and telling their stories at events throughout 2022 is a way to fulfill our goal of sharing and educating the general public about the cultural significance of automobiles.

1952 Hudson Hornet

Known as the “Fabulous Hudson Hornet”, the 1952 Hudson Hornet raced at NASCAR from 1951 to 1955 and was led by Marshall Tigg, Herb Thomas and Dick Rathman. It was a race prepared by Smoky Unique and took Thomas “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” to a 78 podium finish.

This is the only Hudson known to have campaigned at NASCAR. The “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” is owned by Al Schultz and is on display at the National Hudson Motor Car Company Museum in Epsilanti, Michigan.

With a turbine jet engine and a ghee body, Chrysler built 55 of these vehicles as part of the company’s efforts to build a mass-market gas-turbine-powered automobile. Turbine cars were distributed to households across the United States as a consumer research project running from 1963 to 1966.

It is one of only nine vehicles in that program and owns the Stahl’s Automotive Collection. It is on display at their autonomous museum in Chesterfield, Michigan.

The Fabulous Hudson Hornet will be on display at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegans in Greenwich, Connecticut, from 3 to 5 June.
