The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GLE SUV and the GLE Coupe are the latest models to get the Edition 55 treatment, commemorating AMG’s 55th anniversary. They landed in the United States later this year, limiting production to 55 copies of each model.
Similar to the previously announced version 55 model, the changes here are mostly cosmetic. Special decals with AMG crest are available in two available color contrasts — Obsidian Black Metallic and Manufactory Diamond White Metallic. The special edition 22-inch AMG imitation cross-spoke wheels are finished in matte black, with high-gloss flanges and “Edition 55” characters.

The AMG Night package is also standard, with a gloss black front splitter and dark chrome exhaust finish around the windows. Inside is an AMG performance steering wheel with red and black two-tone napa leather upholstery, matte black carbon-fiber trim and “Edition 55” badge.
Mercedes will offer version 55 in both the AMG53 and AMG63, but without any mechanical upgrades. The AMG 53 uses a light-hybrid powertrain based on a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, producing 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. An integrated starter-generator adds 21 hp and 184 pound-feet to the short blast. Both the SUV and coupe versions can reach speeds of 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds, according to Mercedes. The maximum speed of both models is electronically limited to 155 miles per hour.

The AMG 63 models use Mercedes’ ubiquitous 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, producing 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque here, again adding 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the same gentle-hybrid system as the 53 models. Temporary electric boost. Mercedes cites a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds, when the speed limit is raised to 174 miles per hour.
In addition to the GLE SUV and GLE Coupe, Mercedes will bring to the United States 55 versions of the AMG CLA45 and AMG G63, with allocations limited to 55 units. These special editions celebrate the 1967 launch of AMG as an independent company. AMG specializes in Mercedes vehicle tuning and racing, then began working directly with Mercedes in 1990.
