The 1978 Porsche 911 SC “Safari” Rally car is for sale in the United Kingdom through Collection Cars.
Safari-style builds have become quite popular for their rugged appearance, but this 911 also has a true rolling pedigree. It was driven by the block at the 2022 East Africa Safari Classic Rally in February. With a layer of dirt and dust it remains in a completely ethnic state.
Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino drove for eight days at the rally, with the drivers spending more than 18 hours behind the wheel on the racing stage. Along the way, Block and Gelsomino encountered elephants, giraffes, zebras, camels, goats, and other wildlife that had to slow down or stop. Although the pair set eight of the fastest bars in 22 steps, several flat tires and a mistake resulted in the car being repaired and a two-hour fine.
The 911 Teutheel was built by Porsche, which according to the list has been making 911 rally cars since 1992. The firm was started in the late 1970’s / 1980’s by dropping 911 SC body shells. That shell was then reinforced with reinforced plating, and the mounting points of the EXE-TC Five-Way Adjustable Damper were buffed.
Other changes include underbody protection, a whale tail rear spoiler and a roof scoop. The car with Dunlop Direzza 86RW tires rolls on 15-inch braided alloy wheels.
Tuthill Porsche also rebuilt the stock 3.0-liter Flat-6, which now produces 280 hp. It drives the rear wheels with a 5-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
The Safari 911 is one of the few new cars in the block since the end of its exclusive partnership with Ford in 2021. The Safari 911 will be succeeded by Hunipigassus, a 1,400-hp 911 block planned to race at the 2023 Pike Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) in June). The block also has a partnership with Audi that focuses on electric vehicles that have already paid a wild tribute to the Audi S1 E-Tron Quattro Hoonitron, the Quattro S1 rally car.
