Given that BMW has confirmed that the upcoming M2 will be the last new M car without any electrical support for its petrol engine, it is not too surprising that the next M5 will be a hybrid.

The plug-in is expected to come from a version of the hybrid setup that will debut on the XM SUV.

The XM has a hybrid-specific M xDrive all-wheel drive system with an electronic rear differential lock on the rear axle transmission.

It also has an active anti-roll system, although it’s not clear if the lower-riding M5 will require the same technology.

Our previous spy photos revealed that the next 5er’s cabin will have a dual-screen setup behind the wheels like the i4 and iX.

Both cars use a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display located in a wrapped housing.

The next BMW 5 Series will share its platform and basic design with the i5 electric car.

The latter will compete with the Tesla Model S and the upcoming Audi A6 E-Tron and Mercedes-Benz EQ sedan.

The current generation BMW 5 Series has been on sale since 2016 and was facelifted in 2020.
