2023 BMW M4 CSL arrives, resets BMW’s ring record

The fastest BMW (so far) in the vicinity of Nürburgring has been released, but it’s not clear if you can afford it.

On Thursday, the 2023 BMW M4 CSL cover broke. When production begins in July, only 1,000 units will be built, costing 140,895 each. BMW will not comment on how many M4 CSLs have already been sold or how many will arrive in the United States

The boost pressure of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Inline-6 ​​increases from 24.7 psi in the M4 competition to 30.5 psi in the CSL, engine mapping changes accordingly. Power output increases from 40 hp to 543 hp, but torque remains unchanged at 479 lb-ft. The 8-speed automatic transmission (no manual, sadly) has been tweaked for the ideal gear ratio for getting crisper gear changes and updates. BMW has tightened both engine and transmission mounts to handle increased power output.

BMW says the M4 CSL takes 3.6 seconds to sprint from 0-60 mph and hits 120 mph in 10.5 seconds. Maximum speed is electronically limited to 191 miles per hour, and the M4 CSL is the fastest-producing BMW in history with a 7:20.2 lap time around N নrburg.

Weight loss was, presumably, a focus for CSL, meaning “competition, sport, lightweight.” The CSL weighs 3,640 pounds after losing 240 pounds over the standard M4 model. The interior lightweight comes courtesy of only two carbon-fiber bucket seats, which save 53 pounds for the front seat and another 46 pounds by removing the rear seat. Like the M4 competition, the M4 CSL features a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CRFP) roof panel. Using a CRFP hood and trunk lid, 3 pounds and 15 pounds were shaved, respectively.

For a new Titanium rear silencer and low exhaust sound insulation, the CSL will sound different from the lower M4s for both low tone and low weight. A further 33 pounds were removed using a lighter sound detector and less.

The standard laser headlights make it easy to see CSL models for yellow daytime running light. CLS also introduces a taillight technology that uses standard LED bulbs but features light threads woven into the glass light housing. The effect is a distinctive light pattern unlike any other BMW. Buyers will have a choice of Frozen Brooklyn Gray Metallic, Ice White or Black Sapphire metallic exterior colors.

Aerodynamics is tweaked with an integrated trunk lid spoiler and a CRFP front splitter and rear diffuser. Mirror caps are also CRFP.

The suspension and structure changes include a 0.3-inch drop in ride height, use of forged-alloy springs and struts, added springs to help keep tires on the road, more negative front camber, unique anti-roll bar front and rear, a rigid rear subframe without rubber material A front strut brace is made to handle the connection and lateral loads of the CSL.

The standard carbon-ceramic brake, which saves 31.5 pounds in a standard steel setup, is concealed by M-specific matte black imitation alloy wheels. The red brake caliper occupies a 15.7-inch disc at the front and a 15.0-inch disc at the rear. The Z-rated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires, 275 / 35R19 on the front and 285 / 30R19 on the rear, are designed specifically for the M4 CSL. Buyers can also get stable adhesive but more livable tires from the M4 competition at no cost.

The traction control system in CSL allows drivers to select one of five intervention thresholds. The lower M4 model has four settings, and the fifth threshold of CSL allows maximum wheel slippage before safety measures come to save the day. Activating M Dynamic mode will completely disable the stability control system.

Inside, the M4 CSL is not as luxurious as other BMWs. The center console is made from CRFP, which saves 9 pounds. Automaker’s iDrive infotainment controller remains with buttons for various settings and functions. Despite the focus on weight saving, the BMW leather covers the center armrest and adds a wireless smartphone charger. The three-spoke steering wheel looks familiar, but the shift pedals are made of carbon fiber.

The 2023 M4 CSL is now the top dog in the M car lineup, but it won’t last long. The upcoming XM will serve as the division’s flagship, and a smoother version of CSL is reportedly serving as a tribute to the division’s 50th anniversary.
